Well aware of MVS etc.
The notion here is to inform or make people aware without getting bogged down or sidetracked into smaller details.

Most people don't know the difference between a 220 volt supply and a 360 volt supply or why you would need it so I will say electricity rather than use the word "phase".Louis Cypherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07670126160101669248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5673441815180854503.post-86582635845151724072011-05-01T19:24:40.049+01:002011-05-01T19:24:40.049+01:00SGS,

All the banks are interlinked. 25-30 years ago you could jump from ATM to ATM withdrawing your limit at different banks and it would take a day to reconcile from say Key Bank to Fleece Bank.Louis Cypherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07670126160101669248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5673441815180854503.post-67213321816464714492011-05-01T18:40:37.442+01:002011-05-01T18:40:37.442+01:00There are several other reasons you didn't men...There are several other reasons you didn't mention to use these mainframe dinosaurs until today:

- rock bottom stability of the underlying hardware (try this with PC's)...
- BIG underlying databases which must be kept consistent
- Optimized infrastructure for extremley performant I/O (instead of CPU-power).

Most big banks use still IBM/MVS and not VAX: VAXes are too small. People grown up with PC's (so most of the population) predict the death of the mainframe.
