really Louis? Government spending is largely on social support systems (Medicare, Medicaid, UI, SS) to help the POOR and those who CANNOT - not the rich and those who can.... this guy has it almost completely backwards: inflation doesn't hurt the poor - those WITHOUT money - it hurts the rich - those WITH money - who see their wealth devalued.

KD, Truely
I am pretty sure he was talking about the middle class and our demise.
Anyway, when I say "gets it" he understands what he is protesting. He can define it. He has an agenda. Right or Left you have to respect his opinion. He can form a coherent sentence. He doesn't need a teleprompter. He knows his history.
This is the 10% that will herd the 90% in to a cohesive unit. Not saying this is the message that will eventually come out of the protests but this is one of the guys that will influence and steer the people who are not sure what exactly they are protesting. He will take their vague notions and shape them into something.

If you look at the people around him all you can see is confusion. One guy even interrupts him to say "hey lets all march this way to protest police brutality"(Now that's a real moron). He is passionate and he will preach and he will convert.

We can argue all day about foreign policy, welfare, medicaid etc etc. and being more Libertarian than anything else I would simply say start by reigning in the military and go from there. There are so many things wrong with this country that it's easy to get bogged down with saying it started with Nixon or Carter or this President or the Fed etc.
The bottom line is until we get back to what worked 200 years ago and keep what works today we will keep digging deeper and deeper.

KD,
In all fairness I probably should have titled the post "Coherent thought possible on Wall St." or something like that but I was going for dramatic and provocative :)

Kid Dynamite,

This guy in the video has it all right. Our govt is screwing the poor too. How can someone living paycheck to paycheck afford the essentials when the price of essentials rise by 100%? Those who have some savings get hurt too since the value of their savings is being eroded but the guy in the video surely hit the nail on the head.

Very rich people will always be very rich so they are NOT affected by this like those who spend what they earn and/or save.

You got it all wrong.

Louis - I think he comes off like an idiot who read some Gata blog posts about a gold standard and is spouting ignorance.

SilverIsKing - We "depreciate" our currency by roughly 2-3% per year in the form of inflation - it's our way of "Socialism". And guess what - we do it so that we don't have mass poverty and depression.

anyone who thinks that the standard of living in America would be better under a gold standard has a LOT of understanding to come to...This idiot was arguing for a gold standard, basically. It is impossible - because Americans are stupid and irresponsible and need to be supported by the govt. which is related to the subject of a post I just wrote:

I was listening to NPR around 4.00 and they were interviewing some people in Boston. One of them, a nurse, proposed a transaction tax on all Wall St. and estimated 350 Billion generated. She mentioned derivatives, Credit Default Swaps etc.

This is getting interesting because the Gold standard people etc are generally pretty quiet in their views. In other words people are paying attention and the protests are picking up momentum and focus.
I am not going to debate politics as it is a complete waste of time. You guys have at it if you want.

I pass on political debate - wasn't my intent if that's how you read my comment.

As soon as someone mentions "social support" then we are heading into political territory whether we like it or not. I am more interested in the ramifications of the sit in and where it's going politically rather than the right or wrong of it.
In other words is this thing going to gather momentum, is it going to be hijacked by one of the parties, is there going to be a cohesive message? A new leader? Is it going to make a damn bit of difference.
I have a political opinion obviously but I would rather keep it away from any discussion.

If we institute a gold standard effective tomorrow morning I have no doubt it would be a disaster. But had we never gone off it? You're not gonna convince me that wouldnt have been net positive for culture if not for per capita GDP. Not least because we wouldnt have been subsidizing the kind of dysgenics and feckless dependence that you now maintain we need inflation to cope with.
