If you are holding Euros, you will lose pretty exactly 2% in purchasing power every year. After 10 years that's a loss of about 20%. I suppose you'd do much better than the average silverbug this way.
SPX normally goes up now til election...that would support precious metals with 'risk on' year ---- 7 days before 2008 last 7 up 2004 last 7 up 2000 last 7 up 1996 last 7 up 1992 last 7 up
